A Gravel Pit Threatens Our Community

Milestone Materials wants to dig a disruptive gravel mine right next to our homes in the Town of Long Lake, Washburn County, Wisconsin. We’re coming together to stop them — and we need your help.

A 40-Acre Gravel Pit Could Destroy What We Love About Long Lake

Earlier this year, Milestone Materials applied for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) to mine gravel on 40 acres at N329 Lakken Road in Sarona, WI. After careful review, both the Town Planning Commission and Town Board voted unanimously to deny the CUP — citing many reasons. The original CUP application is incomplete at this time. The town ordinance and permits have not been completed. The road plans states “at a later date”. The town roads listed as the proposed truck routes are substantially substandard according to Wis State statutes. The goals and objectives of the Town of Long Lake Comprehensive Plan strongly conflict with the proposed gravel pit.

To date, Milestone has not applied for the necessary and required permits from the Town.

We must act — together — to protect the environment, our property values, and the peaceful way of life we all treasure in the Town of Long Lake.

This Isn’t Just About Gravel. It’s About the Future of Our Town.

If this pit is approved, more will likely follow — and they could be even closer to your home.

  • Property values will fall

  • Dangerous truck traffic will increase

  • Groundwater contamination is possible

  • Wildlife and natural habitats will be damaged

  • The rural peace of our community will be lost
